CORONER UPHOLDS LIMITS ON RESPONSIBILITY OF WOUND CARE NURSES “IN COMMUNITY CARE”

December 15, 2016

List member David Schneidewin appeared for Blue Care Nursing Service in the Inquest into the death of Leah Elizabeth Floyd.

Leah Floyd was receiving supported accommodation and care, for pressure wounds on her elbows and sacrum as a result of long term hospitalisation for tetraplegia suffered from a fall from a balcony on 8 August 2012, at a NGO disability service provider with assistance in wound care by Blue Care.

Ms Floyd’s sacral wound degraded from a stage 2 to stage 4 and by the time she finally agreed to be admitted to hospital, she had rapidly deteriorated and died within a number of days.

The Coroner accepted Blue Care’s submission that given its limited role compared to the “approved disability service provider” which provided the carers, there was no obligation for Blue Care to have policies and procedures to ensure adequate communication in all care settings.
